I have observed that such ads are frequently for chocolate. What can this mean?

Weight is about the biggest moral problem that many women can imagine in their own lives. To control one's weight and become skinny is a great virtue, but to overeat on sweets is sinful--though pardonably so (the wrapper is a joke, after all). Looking at women's magazines in the checkout line is instructive. They always have weight-loss tips and chocolate cake recipes on the same cover. I take it that the readers of these magazines look at the chocolate cake recipes almost as if they were pornography, and then fantasy about themselves as virtuous when they read the weight-loss testimonials.

Sin ads are often jokes. "The Seven Deadly Zins" ad I posted earlier certainly was.
I think our tendency to joke about sin testifies to our failure to see things as they are.

I don't believe that, but I do believe that "a fool [such as me] lifts up his voice with laughter, but a wise man doth scarce smile a little" (Ecclesiastes 7:6).
John, I think there's a tendency to see sin as "pleasure" and "fun", and virtue as boring.
It's really the other way around... in reality, sin only ultimately ever causes suffering. If sins didn't hurt us, they wouldn't be sins.
